Uralchem Trading filed a $17.4 million lawsuit against Yara International

The Latvian branch of Uralchem, Uralchem Trading, has filed a lawsuit against Norwegian company Yara International seeking to recover more than 1.5 billion rubles ($17.4 million). The claim was submitted to the Moscow Arbitration Court in Russia on March 11, though the court has not yet accepted it for consideration. Details of the claim have not been disclosed.
Uralchem and Yara International have a long history of cooperation in the mineral fertilizer trade. However, their business relationship has become strained in recent years due to geopolitical developments, sanctions, and changes in logistics routes. In 2022, Yara International reduced its purchases from Russian producers, including Uralchem and Uralkali. This reduction prompted Russian suppliers to redirect their fertilizer shipments to alternative markets such as Latin America and Asia.
The ongoing litigation could influence the global fertilizer market, as Uralchem and Yara International are prominent industry participants. The market has experienced significant price fluctuations in recent years due to disruptions in supply chains and evolving demand patterns. Analysts warn that disputes between major suppliers could further affect fertilizer pricing and availability.
As Russian producers adapt to shifting trade patterns, European exports have continued to decline. Meanwhile, in 2024, Russia’s fertilizer shipments to China, Latin America, and Africa have increased notably. The legal proceedings between Uralchem Trading and Yara International could extend over several months. If the court rules in favor of Uralchem Trading, Yara International may be required to compensate for financial losses.
