Crystal Crop Protection acquires key herbicide asset from Bayer
Crystal Crop Protection has acquired the rights to ethoxysulfuron, a key active ingredient in herbicides, from Bayer. This marks Crystal’s thirteenth strategic acquisition and its second collaboration with Bayer, following the 2021 purchase of Bayer’s Indian cotton, pearl millet, and mustard seed portfolio. This partnership is expected to increase the company’s EBITDA by 20% and expand its position in the rice herbicide market.
Ethoxysulfuron, effective against broad-leaved weeds and sedges in rice and cereal crops, will be marketed under the Sunrice trademark. The acquisition includes Bayer’s related product mixtures and registrations, positioning Crystal to further strengthen its crop protection offerings in key Asian markets, including India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Pakistan.
The company plans to manufacture ethoxysulfuron locally, improving accessibility and cost-effectiveness for farmers in these regions. This move aligns with Crystal’s strategy to provide sustainable, advanced solutions for weed management, leveraging its distribution network and manufacturing capabilities.
Earlier in 2024, Crystal acquired I&B Seeds, further expanding its portfolio in crop protection and farm mechanization. With support from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Crystal continues to grow its presence across South and Southeast Asia.
