China and Pakistan discuss coal-based fertilizer plant development in Sindh
Pakistan and China are considering the establishment of a fertilizer plant in Sindh Province, utilizing the region’s extensive coal reserves. This proposal was part of the discussions at a recent business meeting focusing on Pakistan-China economic cooperation, attended by Meng Xiaowei, leader of a 16-member Chinese trade delegation, along with senior officials from the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI), representing Karachi’s largest industrial estate. The Thar coalfield, situated in the Thar Desert of Tharparkar District, stands as a pivotal element for this project.
The delegation includes figures from notable Chinese firms in agriculture, energy, transportation, and manufacturing sectors. Meng emphasized the commitment of a significant Chinese business alliance to foster investments in Pakistan, with over 50 companies interested in projects ranging from solar energy developments to fertilizer production. Specifically, ten distinguished companies are in Karachi to seek potential partnerships.
Idrees Gigi, coordinator for the Chinese delegation, highlighted the strategic plans for a coal-based fertilizer production facility in the Thar region. He pointed out the potential for this plant to decrease Pakistan’s dependency on natural gas for fertilizer production. Additionally, Gigi touched on the growing demand for agricultural products and meat in China, which could be an advantageous avenue for Pakistan to increase its exports using its 9.1 million hectares of arable land.
