Qatar starts the construction of world’s largest blue ammonia plant with $1.2 billion investment
The foundation stone for the world’s largest blue ammonia plant was laid during a ceremony in Mesaieed Industrial City. The new facility, representing a significant advancement in Qatar’s clean energy ambitions, is designed to produce low-carbon ammonia, positioning it as a crucial element in global efforts to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions. The plant will boast an annual ammonia production capacity of 1.2 million tons, supplemented by a CO2 injection and storage unit capable of handling 1.5 million tons annually.
Minister Al-Kaabi highlighted the strategic importance of the plant, noting, “Qatar Energy will supply over 35MW of electricity from an upcoming solar power plant in Mesaieed Industrial City to this facility, reinforcing our commitment to producing low-carbon industrial products.”
The construction of the plant will leverage Qatar’s established expertise in ammonia production for fertilizers, in collaboration with Qatar Fertilizer Company (QAFCO). The construction consortium led by ThyssenKrupp and CCC, includes teams from Qatar Energy and Qatar Petroleum.
Located in Mesaieed Industrial City the plant involves an investment of approximately QR4.4 billion ($1.2 billion). It is slated for completion and operational start in the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant milestone in Qatar Energy’s clean energy expansion strategy.
