Japan’s Toyo and Itochu partner with Uzbekistan to build energy infrastructure
Toyo Engineering Corporation (Toyo) and Itochu Corporation (Itochu), two leading Japanese firms, have formalized a cooperation agreement with Uzbekistan’s state-owned Uzkimyosanoat, a major player in the country’s fertilizer and chemical production sector. The agreement targets future investment initiatives, with an emphasis on gas-related projects central to Uzbekistan’s industrial plans.
The partnership aligns with Japan’s growing focus on Central Asia, a resource-rich region of increasing geopolitical significance. As part of Japan’s strategic efforts to expand its economic influence in the region, Toyo and Itochu attended the Central Asia Business Forum in August alongside government representatives and industry leaders. The event facilitated discussions, culminating in a formal signing ceremony held at the 17th Japan-Uzbekistan Economic Joint Conference in Tokyo on October 31.
For Toyo, this agreement marks a return to Uzbekistan, where it successfully completed key industrial projects in the late 1990s, including an oil refinery modernization and a polyethylene plant. With this new partnership, Toyo aims to leverage its extensive expertise in plant engineering and project management to support Uzbekistan’s industrial growth, particularly in gas and chemical sectors, while adhering to high standards of health, safety, and environmental sustainability.
Both Toyo and Itochu bring complementary strengths to the venture. Toyo’s engineering capabilities are known for integrating cutting-edge technology with sustainable development goals, focusing on efficient, state-of-the-art plant designs. Itochu, known for its broad strategic project management experience, will support logistical and operational planning, working closely with Uzkimyosanoat to ensure the successful realization of these projects.
Japan’s proactive support of this venture underscores the region’s rising importance as both an energy resource hub and a stable partner for foreign investments. Through this collaboration, Toyo and Itochu aim to drive mutually beneficial growth in Uzbekistan’s industrial sector, strengthening ties between Japan and Central Asia.
