Genesis Fertilizers teams up with CARBONCO and Whitecap for low-carbon fertilizer project
Genesis Fertilizers Limited Partnership has formed two key partnerships to advance a low carbon-intensity fertilizer production facility in Belle Plaine, Saskatchewan. In collaboration with CARBONCO Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of DL E&C specializing in decarbonization technology, and Whitecap Resources Inc., a Canadian energy company, Genesis Fertilizers will incorporate carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) solutions to significantly reduce emissions in fertilizer production.
CARBONCO will provide post-combustion carbon capture technology, which is designed to capture up to one million metric tonnes of CO₂ annually. Whitecap’s New Energy division will manage the transportation and permanent sequestration of the captured CO₂ at the Belle Plaine Carbon Hub, providing an integrated solution to address both the environmental and regulatory challenges faced by the fertilizer industry.
The proposed facility’s production capacity has been increased from 700,000 to over 1,128,000 metric tonnes per year to meet the growing demand for low-carbon fertilizers in North America. The facility will produce ammonia, urea, urea ammonium sulfate (UAS), and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). The expanded capacity aims to improve cost efficiency through economies of scale and deliver a broader product portfolio to meet the changing needs of the agricultural sector.
In addition to the environmental and operational benefits, the project is expected to contribute positively to the local economy. During construction, the facility will create over 1,500 jobs, with 180 long-term positions anticipated once operations commence. The facility is expected to support various sectors, including logistics, transportation, and maintenance, as it integrates with regional infrastructure.
Genesis Fertilizers is set to begin the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase in the coming months, with commercial operations projected to start by 2029. Further updates will be provided as additional technology partnerships and project milestones are finalized.
