UK banks asked to rethink support for sustainable farming
According to a recent study funded by the British Business Bank, a significant shift in banks’ approach is crucial to assist farm businesses in adapting to and achieving environmental goals. The research, conducted by the Soil Association Exchange, found that financial and business risks are major obstacles for two-thirds of farmers when transitioning to environmentally friendly farming systems.
The survey involved more than 100 farmers, revealing that nearly half (48%) believe that preferential terms for financial support during this transition could enhance cash flow and facilitate changes. Three-quarters of the participants identified improving soil health as a key motivator for shifting towards more sustainable agricultural practices.
