QatarEnergy announced plans for new large-scale urea production in Mesaieed
QatarEnergy has unveiled plans to establish a new, world-scale urea production complex in Mesaieed, a move set to more than double the nation’s annual urea output and position Qatar as a global leader in urea production. The planned facility will include three ammonia production lines and four urea trains, with the first train expected to be operational before 2030. This expansion will increase Qatar’s urea production capacity from the current 6 million tons to 12.4 million tons annually.
Mr. Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, the Minister of State for Energy Affairs and the President and CEO of QatarEnergy emphasized the strategic importance of this project, noting: “We have been producing ammonia and urea in Qatar for over 50 years. Today, we are expanding our experience and further solidifying our position with this unprecedented mega project that will make the State of Qatar the world’s largest urea producer, playing a crucial role in ensuring food security for hundreds of millions of people around the globe, day after day.”
The development will take place in Mesaieed Industrial City, leveraging its existing infrastructure, which includes one of the largest fertilizer and petrochemical export ports in the MENA region. This location will ensure optimal utilization of facilities and establish Mesaieed as a pivotal hub for urea production worldwide.
