U.S.-Pakistan “Green Alliance” enhances agricultural sustainability in the Middle East
During his inaugural visit to South Punjab from July 29 to 31, U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Andrew Schofer underscored the significant role of U.S. partnerships in advancing Pakistan’s agricultural sector and overall economic development. This visit highlighted the ongoing collaborations under the U.S.-Pakistan “Green Alliance” Framework, which aims to promote sustainable economic growth and climate-smart agricultural practices.
DCM Schofer visited the Luftabad mango farm on July 31, where he discussed the U.S.’s contributions to Pakistan’s renowned mango industry. “Pakistani mangoes are renowned worldwide, and this sector is crucial to the country’s economy and culture,” Schofer noted. He detailed U.S. support initiatives, including the provision of advanced grading equipment to mango processing facilities throughout Punjab and Sindh. These efforts have helped enhance technology adoption, reduce labor costs, accelerate shipping processes, and elevate the mangoes to meet international quality and hygiene standards, thereby expanding their reach in international markets.
Highlighting past successes, Schofer referenced a USAID project from 2015 to 2019 that bolstered the international and national competitiveness of Pakistan’s commercial agriculture and livestock sectors, focusing on meat, high-value and off-season vegetables, mangoes, and citrus fruits. This project facilitated over $80 million in private-sector investment and created more than 12,000 full-time jobs.
In addition to his agricultural visits, DCM Schofer toured the Corteva Agriscience Research facility, emphasizing the “Green Alliance’s” focus on expanding not only climate-smart agriculture but also clean energy and effective water management solutions. He noted the broader impact of U.S. enterprises in Pakistan, which employ around 120,000 locals and contribute significantly to the country’s research and development capabilities. This visit marked a reaffirmation of the U.S. commitment to fostering sustainable development and environmental stewardship in collaboration with Pakistan.
