Transforming waste into fuel: Firefly Green Fuels and Synagro Technologies join forces
Britain’s Firefly Green Fuels has partnered with Synagro Technologies, Inc. to introduce Firefly’s advanced fuel-production techniques to the American market. Synagro, a leader in sustainable solutions for biosolids, organics, and residuals, will be the exclusive supplier of the biosolids feedstock required for Firefly’s process.
Firefly has developed a unique method to convert biosolids into sustainable, high-performance fuels, including sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This process, known as hydrothermal liquefaction, chemically transforms biosolids waste into biocrude and biochar. The biocrude is subsequently upgraded into SAF, while the biochar is utilized in various applications.
James Hygate, CEO of Firefly Green Fuels, emphasized that their collaboration with Synagro will expedite the establishment of operations, create new jobs, and produce significant volumes of sustainable fuel. As the largest recycler of biosolids, organics, and residuals in North America, Synagro already offers customized solutions for waste management, contributing to a greener and cleaner world.
Independent analysis from Cranfield University indicates that Firefly’s SAF achieves a 92% CO2e reduction compared to fossil jet fuel.
The partnership aims to validate the technology in North America and attract additional participants. Firefly is constructing a pioneering facility in Harwich, England, and plans to expand into North America soon.
