Yara warns EU authorities fertilizer industry in Europe may collapse
The Norwegian producer of mineral fertilizers Yara International (hereinafter Yara) called on the authorities of the European Union and the governments of their countries to take decisive action to preserve the mineral fertilizer industry.
“It’s extremely important in the current conditions not to stop working to achieve global climate goals which is impossible without strong, green European industry. Rather than weaken the European fertilizer industry, we need a massive, coordinated effort to achieve zero emissions while reducing our dependence on Russia,” said Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of Yara.
According to his statement, the reduction in the production of mineral fertilizers in the European Union reduces their availability for farmers not only in Europe, but throughout the world, with direct negative consequences for global food security.
Therefore, Yara joins the European Parliament in calling for the development of a strategy for mineral fertilizers. It should include ensuring permanent access to natural gas and accelerating the use of renewable energy sources, strengthening the supply of raw materials.
