UN seeks to ease sanctions against Russia and Belarus
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is negotiating with the governments of Russia, Turkey and several other countries to simplify the export of crops from Ukraine to prevent a global food crisis. António Guterres proposes to soften the sanctions imposed against suppliers of potassium chloride from Russia and Belarus.
The diplomats say that Turkey is ready to help parties to reach agreements and will remove mines from the Black Sea and control the ships’ movement there.
Belarus and Russia are second and third global suppliers of potassium chloride. The western sanctions have completely banned its export from Belarus and limited Russian supplies as well. Therefore, António Guterres seeks to eliminate restrictions to return potassium chloride from both these countries back to the global market.
