SUEK is exploring the way to the ammonia market
By 2027, SUEK intends to implement a project for the production of blue ammonia.
The project may be implemented on the basis of the Borodinsky open-pit (Krasnoyarsk region), which produces brown coal. Within the framework of the project, it’s planned to gasify coal with the production of ammonia, capture the resulting carbon dioxide and inject it into the subsoil. The volume of production of blue ammonia is estimated at 800 thousand tons per year. The obtained product is planned to be sold to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
“SUEK is the first company in Russia that will use coal as a raw material for the synthesis of ammonia. At the same time, it is a new niche for brown coal produced at the Borodinsky open-pit, the demand for which will decline in the long term,” said Andrey Viktorov, Editor of Fertilizer Daily.
