Hot debates on subsidies in India
The Punjab Agriculture Department (India) has expressed concerns about the Indian central government paying farmers subsidies for mineral fertilizers through the direct benefit transfer, saying this could lead to misuse of public funds.
As expressed by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Punjab State (agriculture, horticulture and food processing), Viswajeet Khanna, a similar situation may arise when the subsidies are not paid on time or the funds are placed with bank deposits for further release to farmers.
Currently, the larger half of the mineral fertilizer subsidy goes for urea alone.
